Green remediation at Lake City
Lake City, Missouri, U.S.

Critical to the United States’ defense mission, the 4,000-acre Lake City Army Ammunition Plant (LCAAP) is located in Lake City, Missouri. In 2003, ARCADIS was selected to bring 33 areas of environmental concern scattered across the complex into regulatory compliance under CERCLA (also known as Superfund) and to deliver and operate remedial solutions for the three operable units that make up the site. The contract was conducted under the U.S. government's fixed-price remediation program (GFPR), which is managed within ARCADIS' guaranteed remediation insurance program (GRiP®). At $52 million, it is ARCADIS’ largest GRiP® contract; the U.S. Army is ARCADIS’ largest GRiP® client. Green remediation is the practice of considering environmental impacts of remediation at every stage of the process in order to maximize the net environmental benefit of a cleanup. It reduces the demand placed on the environment during cleanup actions and avoids the potential for collateral environmental damage.

ARCADIS incorporated numerous sustainable design elements into its cost-effective remediation solution, including the use of the following systems: Passive-energy equipment with no demand for external utility power; A proprietary energy-efficient, minimally invasive in situ technology to replace the existing high-energy demand pump and treat system; Monitoring of natural attenuation that resulted in nearly zero air emissions, no water and energy consumption and minimal carbon footprint.

The project was completed on a fast-track schedule without the need for site closure.

“We help clients achieve guaranteed site closures and assist them in developing the most fitting solution for future use to preserve the quality of life for the next generation.”
