Highmark, Inc. sought a state-of-the-art data center that could support all technological and business needs, securely house millions of documents, and serve as a dynamic working environment for over 50 employees. RTKL’s design departs from the “gray box” architecture often associated with data centers and creates a stunning, modern structure that achieves LEED Silver certification.

The 87,000-SF facility consolidates Data and Help Desk operations into a single mission critical facility with 35,000 SF of data center space as well as MEP and office support space. Responding to the site’s sloped topography, the two-story building features a stacked infrastructure that allows for service entry on both levels and helps preserve pleasing aesthetics by concealing the industrial appearance of the center’s electrical infrastructure. Design elements contributing to the LEED Silver certification include a rainwater collection system, under-floor air distribution, alternative vehicle power stations, and recycled and renewable interior materials.
