As the seat of the America's legislative branch, the U.S. Capitol is one of the most recognizable and visited historic buildings in the world. RTKL, an ARCADIS affiliate company, was asked to design a screening and orientation center for visitors that would not only function effectively for security purposes but also provide educational resources for the American public and international visitors, in a setting befitting one of world's most memorable structures. With knowledge garnered from a dozen years of work with the Architect of the Capitol, RTKL designed a 580,000-SF facility that enhances the visitor reception experience and strengthens building security while preserving an atmosphere of free public access for the more than three million visitors who tour the Capitol annually.
