In the next few years, the 'Rijksmuseum' in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, will undergo a complete metamorphosis by means of a renovation and expansion. The program directorate of the New 'Rijksmuseum' has asked ARCADIS to complete this project over the next years.
The contours are already known. The New Rijksmuseum will again be the international renowned museum it once was. Well suited for milions of visitors and housed in a beautiful, transparant building. The Spanish architect agency Cruz y Ortiz from the city of Seville, revives the architectonical concept of the original famous Dutch architect 'Cuypers'.
Cruz y Ortiz's design makes important changes to the construction of the existing museum. A space that cennects the east and the west wings, will be built below the tunnel to the museum square. A still to be built auditorium is a part of this connecting space. Cellars of 8 meters deep each will be built under the museum.
On merits of proven knowledge and experience ARCADIS was asked to construct the project. We participate with consultancy services, preliminary design, final design and engineering.
The preparations are well underway. The New Rijksmuseum will be ready in the year 2008.
