In 2001 ARCADIS was assigned by the Rotterdam port authorities to design office facilities and a visitor center for De Slufter. The remarkable pavilion, designed by ARCADIS architect Pros ten Hove, was officially opened in July 2005.
The office facilities in the pavilion are used by the management and supervisors of De Slufter, a dredging spoil depot, established in the 1980s on the Maasvlakte. The presentation room for the public has a view on the international seaport of Rotterdam and industrial activities on one side, and nature and the sea on the other. The 'De Slufter' depot is located between the Port of Rotterdam and a beautiful nature reserve. On the south side extra sand was dumped to create a dune valley and a natural area with varied vegetation. It acts as breeding and resting area for birds and a seal population.
