THE CHALLENGE: For more than 100 years, the Schenck Company had used its site in Darmstadt-Arheilgen for metal processing. In 2003, Schenck began looking for a competent partner who could decommission the 6.5-hectare industrial site and engage a property developer to redevelop the site within a tight four-month time frame.
THE APPROACH: Early involvement with soil, groundwater and building material site investigations positioned ARCADIS well to offer a fixed price/turnkey solution for both consultancy and contracting services and assume overall project risk.
THE RESULT: Asbestos-containing materials were removed, and 260,000 cubic meters of buildings and infrastructure facilities were demolished. ARCADIS analyzed building debris and managed the debris and soil disposal off-site. The site was entirely redeveloped and completed on time. Today, the area is regarded as one of the most attractive new residential areas in the city.
