Ex-Situ Project Soil Stabilization

THE CHALLENGE: Soils beneath a building formerly used for metal processing were contaminated with chromium, lead and tin. Remediating these soils required the evaluation of various strategies to identify the most effective option.

THE APPROACH: ARCADIS recommended the ex-situ stabilization of soils within the building area. A treatability study was completed at ARCADIS' in-house laboratory to determine the most effective stabilization binder mix design for the soils and contaminants. ARCADIS implemented the selected stabilization method to reduce the leachability of the contaminants of concern (COCs). The building floor was removed, and the soils were excavated. The excavated soils were batch processed, and the treated material was backfilled into the excavation. Remediation success was verified by on-site and laboratory metals analyses.

THE RESULT: Groundwater monitoring indicated a reduction of COC concentrations to below the laboratory method detection limits within three months of project implementation.
