THE CHALLENGE: A community centre was built on the site of a disused petrol station. Investigations led to the identification of the contamination of ground water by hydrocarbons (C6 – C16) and BTEX. A solution had to be found to treat the contamination while preserving the building.
THE APPROACH: Given the presence of the building on the polluted zone, ARCADIS selected the hyperoxygenation technique for the remediation treatment, which was approved by the client. Using this technique, nine shafts to depths between 7 and 9 metres were inserted into the soil and sodium percarbonate was injected during 5 injection phases.
THE RESULT: Analyses showed levels of pollution had dropped dramatically, well under approved levels.
