THE CHALLENGE: After closure of a NATO airbase in 1993, examinations were executed regarding possible contaminations. Contaminations found on the site of the former fire department training area and POL (petro/oil/lubricant) tank farm would require remediation works on this site while the remaining areas would not. Soil and groundwater contaminations with mineral oil hydrocarbons (HC) and aromatic hydrocarbons (BTEX) were detected in the areas requiring remediation.
THE APPROACH: During the planning stage, it was determined that microbiologically assisted on-site cleaning and removal of the contaminants in the soil would be the most cost-effective and efficient measure. While doing a tender, a suitable on-site remediation procedure was selected based on economic and technical criteria (aerobic, microbial on-site decomposition and disintegration supported by a hydraulic cycle and a groundwater circulation well). ARCADIS delivered the needed services regarding: investigation; remediation examinations and planning; pre-selection of the remediation procedure to be used; tender and proposal for contract award; water supply permit and air concession applications; and expert assistance with the remediation.
THE RESULT: Remediation services delivered according to schedule, resulting in a clean site.
