THE CHALLENGE: Since 1906, one of the properties of one of the world's largest oil companies has been used as production facility for various chemical products. During the production of these products both the soil and the ground water have been seriously contaminated.

THE APPROACH: ARCADIS applied the so-called funnel-and-gate procedure for the ongoing remediation of the ground water damage on the property. The ground water is diverted by using an underground containment wall, the "funnel", and is then sent through an underground passage filled with reactive iron, the "gate", where it is treated. The solvents are disintegrated and converted into harmless CO2. All installations are built underground and almost maintenance free.

THE RESULT: All contaminants in the ground water are converted into harmless substances (water and CO2).
