THE CHALLENGE: The former household refuse landfill Schweinsdell is located on the eastern border of the city of Kaiserslautern. The area has a size of about 11.5 ha. Adjoining are the German motorway A6 to the south and the motorway access of the U.S. Armed Forces to the east. Between 1969 and 1979, a small valley was filled with approximately 1,000,000 m³ of household refuse.

THE APPROACH: During the remediation, which ARCADIS executed between 2003 and 2006, the surface of the landfill was completely sealed, so that it could be used as a parking lot.

THE RESULT: The approach resulted in a lasting solution combining several factors in a cost-efficient way:
- Remediation of a household refuse landfill
- Construction of a large parking lot
- Intersection-free connection to the motorway A6 and the federal roads B37 and B40.
