THE CHALLENGE: Between mid-1966 until early 1972 about 450,000 tons of industrial waste, which today would be called hazardous waste, were dumped on a partial area of a former industrial landfill. This area had a size of approximately 7 hectares. Apart from dumping industrial waste, household waste, construction debris and excavated soil were also stored on the site in the 1970ies. Later, different securing measures were executed. During the course of a long-term monitoring procedure, which was done in the late nineties, system leaks in the securing structures were detected.
THE APPROACH: In 2000, ARCADIS was charged with the as-is recording and the project management for the remediation of the former industrial landfill. A catalogue of actions for both organizational and structural measures for the repair of the securing elements was developed. During the execution of the repair measures, partial areas of the landfill were relocated, the top sealing was replaced, a new containment wall built and the leachate control system optimised.
THE RESULT: The control system now prevents leaking of hazardous materials to the surrounding area to guarantee a safe and contained situation.
