Containing Contamination in Hamilton Harbor, Canada

THE CHALLENGE: Canada's industrialized Hamilton Harbor has been identified as a Canadian Great Lakes Area of Concern. The Randle Reef site is a priority in the harbor's remedial action plan to restore and protect the area's beneficial uses and delist Hamilton Harbor as an Area of Concern. Contaminants are PAHs and metals and coal-tar nonaqueous-phase liquid (NAPL).

THE APPROACH: ARCADIS was selected to lead the design for an engineered containment facility (ECF) for the remediation of the contaminated sediments. A sheet pile wall designed for docking will form the sides of the ECF. The ECF will contain contaminated sediment  and eventually create new land that can be used as a port facility.

THE RESULT: Based on field and laboratory work, sediment sampling and characterization; geotechnical sampling and analysis; and delineation of areas with free-phase coal-tar NAPL, we completed the preliminary design and cost estimate to allow for containment of over 95 percent of the sediment contamination.
