THE CHALLENGE: The redevelopment of a train station area in a German city also concerned central areas of a former paint factory. The premises are heavily contaminated with pollutants (heavy metals, especially arsenic). This affects both the soil and the ground water. Most contaminations were caused by the former drying rooms and the production facilities for an arsenic-containing paint powder. The contaminations with arsenic go down as deep as the saturated soil zone and have even been shown in the ground water.
THE APPROACH: ARCADIS conducted a site investigation and sampling in accordance with the Federal Soil Protection Ordinance, followed by soil investigation and foundation work and final risk evaluation. Two remediation options were proposed. During the subsequent remediation examination, the two options were compared with regard to a benefit-value analysis and also their costs.
THE RESULT: Various options to solve the contamination problem, enabling the city to continue its development plans.
