Answers to Climate Change with Energy Audit, Belgium
|
THE CHALLENGE: With the signing of the Kyoto Treaty in 1997, industrialized countries made the commitment to radically cut greenhouse gas emissions by 2012. With the Benchmark Covenant, the Flemish government created a framework in which companies can develop an energy plan and in return are exempt from the additional energy consumption taxes. General Motors joined the Covenant on a voluntary basis and called on ARCADIS' environmental specialists for an energy audit.
THE APPROACH: ARCADIS developed a global savings plan with a detailed package of measures within five months. The dossier convincingly demonstrated that General Motors Belgium already scored high marks in energy efficiency and proposed realistic measures where areas of improvement were identified.
THE RESULT: Realistic measures that were feasible for the company and acceptable to the government were proposed. And General Motors could benefit from the Covenant.
