THE CHALLENGE: The Dutch Government recently decided to allocate 50 million euros for research in field of climate adaptation. This research will be carried out in the so called programme "Knowledge for Climate Proofing the Netherlands". One of the objectives is to link the results and experiences from the programme with international projects where the same type of questions concerning climate change and spatial planning exist. The overall goal is to exchange knowledge, jointly develop new knowledge and adaptation strategies to make delta regions climate proof on the short and long term and protect these regions from the negative effects of climate change, such as a higher risk of floods.
THE APPROACH: With help of public-private partnerships knowledge and adaptation strategies can be exchanged via twinning projects. ARCADIS as a partner of the Climate proofing programme is contributing to this latter, by setting up a twinning between the USA and the Netherlands with a focus on linking the Dutch Delta with the Bay Delta in California and the Lower Mississippi Delta in Louisiana.
THE RESULT: Exchange of know how and the development of new projects protecting coast lines and nature.
