River water and nature management, Netherlands

THE CHALLENGE: Water board Regge en Dinkel in the Netherlands has been thinking ahead regarding the river basin of the Regge. A vision for the year 2020 is aimed at water management that functions in a sustainable fashion with the optimal use of the water in the region itself. The vision concentrates on the development of the new watercourse De Doorbraak, among other aspects. De Doorbraak is unique in terms of scale. The combination of water and nature is to have a length of 12 kilometres. It runs from the east side of Almelo up to the Middle-Regge. Within the scope of safety, the watercourse offers an additional drainage route and more space for the water (storage).

THE APPROACH: In support of this project, ARCADIS combines much know-how and experience in the form of a section study, ecological vision, zoning scheme, claim settlement, public involvement and the supervision of the tendering procedure. It is to be completed in 2014.

THE RESULT: Thanks to the ecological corridor between East and West Twente, plant species and animal species can migrate further. At the same time, the watercourse will contribute to a better quality as it separates urban and rural water.
