Emergency intervention after gas oil leak, France

THE CHALLENGE: Following the accidental leakage of 40,000 litres of gas oil, the presence of hydrocarbons was identified in a stream 15 m below the oil depot.

THE APPROACH: Arcadis was called for an emergency operation involving the services below:
- Soil:
* Lowering of the earth-moving machinery by crane to the bottom of the pit,
* Stripping and sorting of the surface layers based on organoleptic criteria, etc.
* Storage of the polluted soil on and under polyane sheet with a view to their later treatment (volume involved: 100 cu. m.).
- Ground water: Recovery of the uncombined phase by pumping / skimming.
- Geological and structural surveys in order to locate the main fracture system.
- Installation of a system of monitoring piezometers.

THE RESULT: The large majority of the spilled oil was retrieved, preventing serious and permanent contamination.
