LGV Rhin-Rhone will provide a high-speed rail link between Burgundy, Alsace and the Saône-Rhône valley. It forms the shape of a three branch star with Dijon at its center. The west branch, 45 km long, starts from the historical "PLM" line at its west end, goes through the center of Dijon where a new TGV station is to be built, and connects to the Dijon-Dôle and Dijon-Mulhouse line towards the east. The project can be divided into two sections:
- Towards the west, the new line crosses a hilly countryside for about 35 to 45 km. The position of the lay-out must be such as to minimize the environmental impact as well as to reduce the civil engineering cost (especially a tunnel, several km long, hosting the ramp between the valley and the plateau). Two connections, one to the "PLM" line and the other to a future LGV, are to be studied.
- Across Dijon, the new line will go appreciatively from north to south partly on existing RFF ground. Towards the south-east, the area is densely constructed and an underground section of several km will be needed. This section ends with the connections to the east lines.
The station will enable the travelers to connect from local TER trains to high speed TGV trains. Located very near the town center, numerous transversal road accesses must be maintained while accommodating connections to the Dijon-Nancy line, north and south of the station.
