ARCADIS, together with landscape architect Niek Roozen and MPC, conducted a feasibility study of the development opportunities of a touristic theme park on the Island of Gran Canaria. Tinoja Grupe Empresarial S.L. is our client. The theme park will be named "Flowering Islands of the World". To date, tourism on Gran Canaria has been pointed towards beach holidays. Due to recent developments in the world, f.i. terrorism, SARS, natural disaster and wars, the stream of tourists to Gran Canaria has decreased significantly. In addition, Spain is experiencing the competition from cheaper bulk destinations, such as Turkey. Therefore, an extension of the touristic offerings is desirable.
The intended location is a banana plantation that doesn't yield enough return. There, Tinoja wants to create a recreative and touristic theme park. ARCADIS developed a concept and studied the financial and economical feasibility.
The concept comprises the development of a park that displays the horticulture and flora of various vulcanic islands around the world. The park will also house the world's largest collection of canaries and the "Vulcano Dragon Tree Forest", where visitors can discover the world of vulcanoes in an educational and playful way.
