New ship loader in São Luís do Maranhão, Brazil

In August 2005 ARCADIS finished the installation of a new ship loader at Pier III of the Ponta da Madeira Maritime Terminal, in São Luís do Maranhão in the northeast of Brazil. ARCADIS was responsible for the site works supervision.

The complete project included the construction of a belt conveyor system; ARCADIS work involved quality assurance services and design, civil works and electric-mechanical coordination.
Our client is CVRD (Companhia Vale do Rio Doce), the largest global exporter of iron ore and pellets, commercializing its products for steel industries all over the world, including China. Both Pier III and the new ship loader, with a capacity of 8,000 t/h, are part of the loading capacity increase at the sea shore. Once the ship loader is implemented, CVRD will be able to load 85 MTPY of iron ore from 2006.

The increase in loading capacity of iron ore, pellets and manganese mined in Carajás (PA) is aimed at exportation. The Carajás Mine produces 65 Mtpy of iron ore, transported to Ponta da Madeira Maritime Terminal through 892 km of Carajás railway, with simultaneous ship loading at the existing Piers I, II and III.
