The Challenge
Hermann Park is one of Houston's most historically significant public green spaces. The goal of this project was to preserve the integrity of Hermann Park, enrich its heritage as a unique landmark, and transform it into one of the nation's premier urban parks.
Hermann Park is almost 100 years old and was in need of some upgrades. The first phase of the project involved several challenging projects that include civil, structural, and M.E.P. engineering services that improve the park while maintaining the historical integrity of the historic park.
The Solution
The project was named the Heart of the Park and the first phase was completed in September 2001. Park improvements included the relocation of the Pioneer Monument, a 50-foot high pink granite obelisk first erected in the park in 1936; new surface parking lot; partial demolition of the existing paving around the Sam Houston Circle; and an expanded and the improved Molly Ann Smith plaza at the south end of the reflection pool that contains four interactive and playful fountains. The Lake Overlook reconstruction included such features as a raised picnic lawn, dramatic views and generous steps to McGovern Lake, as well as shaded seating areas flanking the picnic lawn area.
The second phase of construction included a large reflection pool. It will feature sculpted stone edges, a black bottom, and a "white water" cascade at its north end. The pool's black floor increases reflection so you can see yourself and the surrounding scenery in the water. ARCADIS was responsible for the structural engineering design, drainage design, and lighting design of the pool.
ARCADIS developed innovative solutions to fit new facilities and utilities into the existing park. To avoid damaging 100-year-old trees and tree root zones ARCADIS developed utility corridors and stacked utilities. By consolidating utility areas, ARCADIS was able to maintain the historical integrity of Herman Park.
The revitalization of Hermann's Park was completed end 2003.
