The Kinzig reservoir near Bad Soden-Salmünster was drained in late summer 2002 and a safety check of the dam carried out. ARCADIS was contracted by the responsible water board (WVK) to plan these activities and to prepare the final safety report.
This routine check-up of the dam was carried out after the reservoir had been drained and the facilities that are usually under water became accessible for inspection and servicing.
Draining of the reservoir commenced in August 2002, inspection, servicing and repair work followed at the end of September. At the beginning of December, filling of the reservoir began. Drainage works and safety check were then evaluated and documented.
All work was supervised by a work group comprising representatives of the Kinzig water board, the responsible authorities, and ARCADIS. In regular meetings, project progress was checked and the next steps agreed.
As the Kinzig is used for fishing and is of ecological value, planning included the aspects nature conservation, fishing, and species protection.
After completion of the works, safe operation of the dam will guarantee future flood protection in the Kinzig valley.
